Description

Description

The Facemask Appliance is a one-piece unit comprised of a stainless steel framework (central core) with adjustable forehead and chin pads as well as a “cross piece” that attaches directly to an intraoral (in the mouth) appliance to bring the upper jaw forward and downward. This is commonly used in conjunction with Rapid Palatal Expander(RPE) which has built-in hooks on each side for hooking of the elastics.

General Instructions

General Instructions

The Facemask Appliance is used in patients that present with an "underbite" or Class III malocclusion. It is to be worn at least 12 hours a day. This means you need to wear it more than when you are sleeping. You should not need to wear it during school, as long as you can start wearing after you get home from school, and when you go to bed.

1

Try to first hook the elastics to the expander hook and then pull it towards the plastic rod on the facemask.

2

When removing it, make sure to hold the facemask with one hand, while removing the elastic using the other hand, one side at a time.

What to Expect

What to Expect

As with any appliance, there is a short adjustment period as the teeth may experience some minor pressure or soreness as the body gets used to the appliance. If needed, you can take over-the-counter pain medication such as Tylenol or Advil for the first few days. It is normal to develop redness and/or rash at the forehead and chin and this is a sign of good wear! Diaper rash cream or lotion can help ease the symptoms. If any part of the piece feels loose, contact Dr. Julien and his team immediately. If you cannot be seen right away, you can use a hexagonal key that fits and tighten the bolts yourself if you feel confident.

REMEMBER!

REMEMBER!

The more you wear, the faster the results will be. The less you wear, the longer you will have to wear your facemask.
